STUDIES

It is very rewarding to spend time painting objects or flowers. They have their own rhythm, surface textures and personalities. Spring is when we tend to feel more energised and alive so I always find myself painting flowers ... irises in particular. I love the bold petal shapes and the intensity of colours that are displayed, as well as the transparent layers that appear when the light is at its best. Still life draws one in and allows me to focus on detail, shadows and edges. A welcome 'push and pull' between 'suggestion' and 'realism'.
